Why February 14 Feels Different Every Year
They say Valentine's Day is just a commercial holiday, but for me, it's always been so much more and it happens always on Valentine's Day, like clockwork, bringing with it a little extra warmth to even the coolest February days. It's not just about roses and chocolates; it's a gentle nudge to pause and tell the people we care about how much they mean to us. Whether you're single, in a relationship, or celebrating love in all its forms, this day has a way of making everyone feel seen. There’s something about knowing that across the world, people are taking a moment to show love that makes the day feel meaningful.
I remember one Valentine's Day when I was a kid, my mom left little notes in our lunch boxes, and my dad brought home heart-shaped pancakes for breakfast. Those simple gestures stuck with me more than any fancy gift could. As a teen, I make it a point to do the same: writing handwritten letters to my closest friends, dropping by my lola's house to give her a hug, or even just sending a text to someone I haven't talked to in a while.
What makes Valentine's Day so beautiful is that it celebrates all kinds of love, the love between partners, yes, but also the love we share with our families, friends, and even ourselves. I know friends who spend the day with their pets, others who organize get-togethers for single friends, and some who use it as a day to pamper themselves with a good book and their favorite food. This year, I’m planning to take my younger siblings out for ice cream and listen to what’s on their minds sometimes the best way to show love is just to listen.
Love isn't something we keep to ourselves, it's something we pass on, making every Valentine's Day a chance to make the world a little kinder. This year, I’m also planning to spend part of the day volunteering at our local community center, helping pack meals for families who need a little extra support. Some of our neighbors are organizing a small concert for the elderly in our barangay, and everyone’s pitching in to make it special. When we share love beyond our own circles, we remind ourselves that we’re all connected and that’s the best gift Valentine’s Day can give us.References
