What Makes Intayon Ilocos Sur Festival Special
Every year, Ilocos Sur bursts with life for the Intayon Festival, a celebration all about "coming together" as one big community. The word "Intayon" means unity, and that’s exactly what we feel as families, friends, and visitors gather to honor our province’s culture and heritage. It’s the time of year when everyone sets aside their daily work to join in the fun and show pride in where we come from.
There’s never a dull moment during Intayon Festival. The fun run kicks things off early in the morning, with people of all ages lacing up their shoes to run through our town streets. Later comes the grand parade, where different barangays and schools march by with colorful costumes and creative floats. We also have exciting street dance competitions, where groups showcase traditional and modern moves, plus the much-awaited Mr. and Ms. Ilocos Sur pageant that highlights our province’s talented young people.
Stretching along the main road is a long food fair where you can find all our favorite Ilocano dishes. From crispy bagnet and savory pinakbet to sweet tupig and kakanin, every stall serves up food made with love by local cooks. As the sun goes down, the main stage comes alive for the concert – local bands and performers take the mic, and everyone dances and sings together until late into the night.
At the heart of everything is gratitude and togetherness. We give thanks for good harvests and peaceful days, while elders share stories of how this festival started long ago. Young and old mix and mingle, making new friends and strengthening old bonds. When the festival ends, we carry that feeling of unity with us until next year knowing that Intayon Festival is more than just events, it’s about what makes us family.
